Hi, I’m a Brooklynite and I’m wondering if you can point me in the right direction. I would like to learn how to fish this summer. Can you tell me if you offer classes or if you can recommend a place or person? Cool website. Thank you very much, Jen

Hi Jen. What kind of fish would you like to fish for and where are you located? Our go-to shop in our neighborhood is Dream Fishing Tackle in Greenpoint (on Manhattan Avenue). Barbara there will take good care of you and point you in the right direction. We’re also organizing a trip on a party boat out of Sheepshead Bay. This is going to happen May 12. Party boats can be a lot of fun as the captain will get you onto fish and the mates will run around preparing the rods, baiting the hooks etc. if you want them to. It’ll also give you a chance to meet a bunch of organizers of the derby we run in the fall and meet other fishing friends as well.

well… technically the Rockaways is in Queens. I know of some northshore spots on the LI Sound near the LI/Queens border but they’re very highly guarded and somebody might kill me if I gave them away. Rockaways (if you have wheels) are a good spot. Many jetties to be had. We fished the ones around 69th St. last weekend and I got my first bass of the year there. Ft. Tilden, Jacob Riis (jetty at 149th St.) produce, and of course there’s Breezy Point, which is a great spot. Have you tried fishing the Ft. Totten area?
